The identity of neighborhoods and cities can often be traced to the indelible mark of the built environment. From commercial districts that are primarily marked by large warehouses or railroads to suburban counterparts with wide streets appointed with shopping centers and parks, the infrastructure, building typology, and design have the power to shape the trajectory and development, or in some cases, the disinvestment of a neighborhood. Just as popular eateries can rebrand historic neighborhoods or the addition of a new park can invite new residents and housing, the responsible stewardship of places has the potential to transform communities, build stronger neighborhoods, and serve as a catalyst for economic growth and development.
Sustainable and resilient design, however, requires design that considers the context of its neighborhood—the challenges, history, pain points, hopes, and aspirations of the people that occupy it. On this week’s episode of TheSquare Podcast, Tina McKone, Project Architect in Corgan’s Education Sector, shares how the power of the built environment shapes community, how resilient design depends on the community-based design, the challenges and opportunities to elevate the collaborative process, and explores the benefits through a case study Corgan participated in called Complete Communities.
