Son of an immigrant family from Lagos, Nigeria, Femi Kareem is a Louisiana-born aviation architect that went from turning toothpaste boxes into airplanes to designing some of the world’s largest airport terminals. Through early personal doubts, Femi has transformed his passion for urban design and people-centric solutions into a career that boasts both large-scale global hubs that reflect the complexity and vibrancy of micro-cities to regional airports that are an extension of the culture and community it serves. In this episode of TheSquare, Femi shares where he finds his inspiration and how it shapes his personal imprint on design as he creates memorable experiences that are not only safe, efficient, and functional but also attractive, welcoming and live in harmony with the people that move through them. Whether part of a team or leading the design process from beginning to end, Femi remains true to his design process: telling a story, finding moments that invoke wonder and tap into the human spirit, and keeping people at the center of design. Listen in as he shares advice for emerging architects, the lessons he’s learned along the way, and what excites him the most about the future and potential of design.
