TheSquare Ep #62 · Selah
Thursday Apr 27, 2023
Thursday Apr 27, 2023
Jefferson Street—the rhythm and lifeblood of North Nashville ceased to exist when Interstate I-40 roared through the neighborhood and split the community. The once vibrant district rich in history, culture, and economic prosperity sharply fell into poverty and decline. In an optimistic hope to restore and resurrect North Nashville, a team of architecture students from Tuskegee University designed Selah, a mixed-use commercial development offering museums, learning enrichment facilities, and business centers interspersed with outdoor walking paths, gardens, and greenspace to serve local residents within the underprivileged community.
The design garnered first place in the National Organization of Minority Architecture Students (NOMAS) for the 2022 Barbara G. Laurie Design Competition. In this episode, Team Captains Trenton Scott and Tyler Littles share the video and concept behind their team’s passion project. Join us as these fifth-year architecture students explore how design can shape our vision for the future and reclaim underserved communities.

A Curious Conversation w/ Professor Amma Asamoah · Tuskegee University · TheSquare
Thursday Mar 30, 2023
Thursday Mar 30, 2023
Inspired by her activist mother who encouraged her at a young age to improve their neighborhood in New Jersey, Amma O. Asamoah dedicated her career to designing architecture in underserved communities. Earning her Master’s in Sustainable Architecture in Philadelphia and her BA in Architecture and Construction at Tuskegee University in Alabama, today Professor Asamoah teaches architect students at Tuskegee to connect with their roots and design with empathy. As architects, she says it’s our responsibility to shape communities and build meaningful places -- to push further, question, dig deeper, and tell our stories.
As a parent, professor, NOMA advisor, designer, and founder of the Legacy Project in Ghana, Amma has come full circle as a young activist and leader in education and architecture.
Listen in as she weaves her tapestry of ancestry, academia, diversity, and heritage in this episode of TheSquare.

TheSquare Ep #58 · Mental Health and Education
Thursday Feb 16, 2023
Thursday Feb 16, 2023
With a renewed focus of how the built environment impacts the wellbeing of its users, Corgan’s Education practice expands typical notions of mental health to consider the unique challenges of students through their educational journey. Education design has long considered how best to support the mental health of students including those with anxiety, stress, depression or formal diagnosis such as Autism or ADHD.
However, in this episode of TheSquare, Chloe Hosid, Design Researcher at Corgan, shares the several other mental, social, emotional, and behavioral experiences in student development that profoundly influence how they perceive and engage with their space, their curriculum, others, and themselves.
From the pressure to grow up faster to developing a sense of self, learn how education design can better meet students where they are—responding more empathetically to how these challenges evolve through their academic career and creating spaces that empower them as the leaders of tomorrow.

TheSquare Ep #57 · Tai Kolisnyk Profile
Thursday Feb 02, 2023
Thursday Feb 02, 2023
One of Corgan’s Project Specialists of the Education Studio, Tai started as a summer intern after coming to the US from the Ukraine to pursue her education in architecture, and she has been here ever since. After watching her mother work as a math and physics school teacher and learning the ins and outs of the profession, designing schools comes naturally to her. “Kids are curious creatures by nature, and teachers want to do a good job, so we help by designing buildings where they can work together,” she says.
Despite the unrest in Ukraine, she says the communal aspect of the Ukrainian people remains strong as they are kindling a spirit of courage and positivity. “Even though the war has ravaged much of the country, people still find moments of celebration and joy, and hope to rebuild a new cultural identity expressed through architecture.”
For creative expression, Tai speaks three languages and is learning Korean, listens to K-Pop, and plays bass guitar. Find out how the Ukrainian culture and her upbringing influence Tai as an architectural designer in this episode of TheSquare.

A Curious Conversation w/Jennifer Zientz · Neuroplasticity · TheSquare
Thursday Jan 19, 2023
Thursday Jan 19, 2023
Brain Health is at the top of everyone’s mind these days. New research is finding we can optimize peak performance, rebound from head injuries, and live happy and healthy lives well into advanced age, according to Jennifer Zientz with UTD’s Center for BrainHealth. The power of neuroplasticity makes possible expanding the potential and ability of the brain. Tapping into new research uncovers powerful tools to reorganize, restructure, change, and in many ways retrain the brain.
With strong research to demonstrate how our mental wellness and brains are impacted by the consequences of rumination, negative thought cycles, and multi-tasking and how more positive cognitive strategies can encourage a new pattern of responses and experiences, the concept of neuroplasticity offers an opportunity to reshape how we move through our world and our lives.
Similarly, in this Curious Conversation, we learn how to become an architect of our own brain through Strategic Memory and Advanced Reasoning Tactics (SMART). Jennifer shares how the research and tools of neuroplasticity can empower how you work and think to unleash your brain’s greatest potential.
