TheSquare Ep #63 · David Rose | Explore
Thursday May 11, 2023
Thursday May 11, 2023
In this episode, David Rose, recipient of the 2022 Corgan Explore program, takes us on a journey to discover Scandinavian architecture and explore how daylighting enhances the visual experience. David spent ten days traveling in Iceland, Norway, and Denmark in search of some of the world’s most influential buildings and tells the story behind how Nordic light shapes beautiful and meaningful spaces. In his curated video documentary David Does Scandinavia, David explores the nine pillars of Nordic light as a universal element in architecture and interior design.
In his video, he illustrates how sculpting and capturing light creates compelling and memorable shapes -- from light carved from clerestory windows in the Oslo City Hall to the soft diffused natural lighting reflected Iceland’s Church of Seltjarnarnes. Join us to learn more in this fascinating commentary on Nordic light and its influence on modern and contemporary architecture.

TheSquare Ep #62 · Selah
Thursday Apr 27, 2023
Thursday Apr 27, 2023
Jefferson Street—the rhythm and lifeblood of North Nashville ceased to exist when Interstate I-40 roared through the neighborhood and split the community. The once vibrant district rich in history, culture, and economic prosperity sharply fell into poverty and decline. In an optimistic hope to restore and resurrect North Nashville, a team of architecture students from Tuskegee University designed Selah, a mixed-use commercial development offering museums, learning enrichment facilities, and business centers interspersed with outdoor walking paths, gardens, and greenspace to serve local residents within the underprivileged community.
The design garnered first place in the National Organization of Minority Architecture Students (NOMAS) for the 2022 Barbara G. Laurie Design Competition. In this episode, Team Captains Trenton Scott and Tyler Littles share the video and concept behind their team’s passion project. Join us as these fifth-year architecture students explore how design can shape our vision for the future and reclaim underserved communities.

A Curious Conversation w/ Professor Amma Asamoah · Tuskegee University · TheSquare
Thursday Mar 30, 2023
Thursday Mar 30, 2023
Inspired by her activist mother who encouraged her at a young age to improve their neighborhood in New Jersey, Amma O. Asamoah dedicated her career to designing architecture in underserved communities. Earning her Master’s in Sustainable Architecture in Philadelphia and her BA in Architecture and Construction at Tuskegee University in Alabama, today Professor Asamoah teaches architect students at Tuskegee to connect with their roots and design with empathy. As architects, she says it’s our responsibility to shape communities and build meaningful places -- to push further, question, dig deeper, and tell our stories.
As a parent, professor, NOMA advisor, designer, and founder of the Legacy Project in Ghana, Amma has come full circle as a young activist and leader in education and architecture.
Listen in as she weaves her tapestry of ancestry, academia, diversity, and heritage in this episode of TheSquare.

TheSquare Ep #58 · Mental Health and Education
Thursday Feb 16, 2023
Thursday Feb 16, 2023
With a renewed focus of how the built environment impacts the wellbeing of its users, Corgan’s Education practice expands typical notions of mental health to consider the unique challenges of students through their educational journey. Education design has long considered how best to support the mental health of students including those with anxiety, stress, depression or formal diagnosis such as Autism or ADHD.
However, in this episode of TheSquare, Chloe Hosid, Design Researcher at Corgan, shares the several other mental, social, emotional, and behavioral experiences in student development that profoundly influence how they perceive and engage with their space, their curriculum, others, and themselves.
From the pressure to grow up faster to developing a sense of self, learn how education design can better meet students where they are—responding more empathetically to how these challenges evolve through their academic career and creating spaces that empower them as the leaders of tomorrow.
