Airports, airplanes, and automobiles! This episode takes us to a municipal airport in Torrance, California, where we meet John Mares, private pilot, sports car enthusiast, and Associate Principal of our Aviation Studio in Los Angeles. The son of a combat naval pilot, John started flying single-engine aircraft at age 14, collects beautifully designed cars including a 1965 Corvette Stingray, and has logged over 30 years of experience in airport design and construction. As wellness, inclusivity, and kindness find their crescendo in national workplace conversations—Gen Z and future talent prioritizing commitments to equity and inclusion and employers celebrating the value of diverse voices and perspectives, office design has both the opportunity and challenge to respond to not only the different ways we work, think, and learn but also the differences in how we experience and perceive our environments. Responding to the diversity of human brains, or neurodiversity, provides insight into how elements of the built environment including privacy, lighting, acoustics, and textures can impact our experience and productivity. From autism and ADHD to dyslexia, variations in neurocognitive functioning can profoundly shape how we see and experience spaces. In this episode, we meet our Director of the Model Shop, Dylan Wells, who made the move from aviation architecture to Corgan’s on-site workshop where he designs, builds, and fabricates models and one-off projects for our architects and interior design teams. Equipped with 3D printers, robotics, woodworking tools, laser cutters, and CNC routers, the model shop is where tested tools meet the latest technology and advanced material science. See how the physical world comes to life through the creation of 3D scaled models of skyscrapers, buildings, and façade elements as well as custom perforated ceiling panels, interior furnishings, light fixtures, and more!

Magnified by the pandemic crisis, exhaustion and burnout among healthcare providers signaled the long-awaited need for positive change. With up to 50% of healthcare providers considering leaving the profession due to working conditions, designing efficient and functional healthcare facilities is crucial to the physical, mental, and emotional well-being of staff, as well as patients. Gerard Gulpeo and Nikki Cirrincione of the Healthcare Studio in LA discuss designing spaces to improve the future of the healthcare workplace. As a former trauma nurse, Nikki explains how stress, long work hours without breaks, and inefficiencies in healthcare facility design take a toll on healthcare providers. Nurses’ voices must be heard in creating spaces that provide safety, reduce stress, and support staff with better amenities, collaborative workspaces, technology, wellness rooms, and outdoor spaces for recharging in nature.

Former Creative Director at Corgan and current Marketing Director of Panini Trading Cards, Jeff Hoferer is first and foremost a creative storyteller. From being the “weird” kid who wrote poems and sang songs, to filming videos in high school, and later acting and producing movies in LA, for Jeff all the world’s a stage. “Putting something on paper out of thin air that takes someone on a journey seems magical,” Jeff exclaims. A Corganite for 25 years, as a child Chuck was fascinated by the ever-changing Dallas skyline and knew his calling was to design buildings. “The universal issues of design transcend all sectors,” he says, "it isn’t about the object; it isn’t about its place in history; it’s about the experience it imparts—and now more than ever, the power of place and making it a memorable place is most important.” Chuck derives inspiration from getting out of fixed, rigid settings and engaging in everything from gardening and painting to visiting museums and building an extensive travel portfolio. While he still values drawing by hand on paper, he explains how computers have changed the profession immensely.
