Thursday Jun 23, 2022
Thursday Jun 23, 2022
The pandemic created a major shift in the workplace, prompting companies to examine how they use space. Tech companies especially have the agility to experiment with more flexible spaces that support innovation, collaboration, and culture. Jill Ibison Vessels, Vice President of the Interiors Studio, discusses how to bring people back to the office and support how they want to work.
Whether in-person or virtual, planners are creating spaces where employees can strategize and connect--project rooms with digital infrastructure, coffee bars, fitness rooms, and soft furnishings are on-trend for tech companies. Find out why in this week’s episode of TheSquare.

TheSquare Ep #45 · Fantasy vs. Reality - Mixed-use Development
Monday Jun 13, 2022
Monday Jun 13, 2022
This week on TheSquare, we discuss multifamily and mixed-use developments. James Adams, Vice President, and Stephen Lohr, Vice President and Director of Multifamily, deep dive on trends for how people are choosing to live, work and play. They explore how Corgan is reigniting multi-family with the adaptive use of older structures, office buildings, mixed-use developments, and large master-planned communities in the exciting evolution of multifamily housing. From wrap and podium apartments to urban townhouses and garden-style homes, James and Stephen speak about the design and architecture that influence communities and lifestyle choices. It’s an exciting time for multi-use housing as people migrate to urban areas that offer amenities and convenience as well as a sense of connection. Their advice: steward resources well. Pick your moments, pick your spaces, and spend extra care to get the proportion, rhythms, and finishes right so they will endure. First and foremost, it’s about designing spaces where everyone can have a sense of pride ― the people developing the space, the people who live there, and the communities they serve.

TheSquare Ep #42 Design Lessons From Teachers
Thursday Mar 24, 2022
Thursday Mar 24, 2022
Few professions were upended by the past two years as much as teachers. Met with immediate school shutdowns, technology inequities, and learning gaps, teachers must also navigate the more enduring changes in how we learn and work.
While schools have been good at prioritizing improved student experience and performance, they have been, generally speaking, less successful in providing spaces that support those responsible for delivering those outcomes. Corgan’s 2022 study, Design Lessons from Teachers, surveys 1000 K-12 teachers from across the nation to uncover the challenges and opportunities in school design to better support teacher performance, satisfaction, recruitment, and ultimately, student outcomes.
Since the firm’s original study on teacher pain points and preferences in 2019, surveyed teachers cited limited learning environments as a primary source of stress—35%, up by 10% while also citing its increased importance in their ability to be a good teacher—71% compared to 38% in 2019.
So, what do teachers need? Sangeetha Karthik, Associate Principal in Corgan’s Education practice and Melissa Hoelting, Design Research Specialist at Hugo, Corgan’s Research and Development team, share the top five lessons from teachers and what they need from school design.
