Is the future of agriculture micro-farms? When the pandemic hit, the retail food landscape changed dramatically. With “big food” supplying most restaurants and grocery stores, they faced numerous challenges— from labor shortages, redistribution challenges to distribution sites with long travel times— causing many individuals to turn to smaller, local farms.
In this week’s episode of TheSquare Podcast, we have a curious conversation with Jeff Bednar, Owner and founder of Profound Microfarms and Profound Foods. The Profound family business started as a 2.6-acre farm in Texas growing leafy greens, edible flowers, culinary herbs, and microgreens in 17,000 sqft of hydroponic greenhouses. Jeff then founded Profound Foods, a distribution hub that he created to connect farmers and chefs. As a result of the Covid-19 pandemic, Jeff created Profound Kitchen to create value-added goods out of end-of-season produce and products that enhance the at-home cooking experience. Listen in as Jeff shares his journey down the path from growing his own food to connecting with the local food community, bridging supply chain gaps, and solving problems for farmers, chefs, educators, and more. Let’s get curious!

When it comes to creating a state-of-the-art airport, a team of designers and constructors working together can achieve far greater things than the two entities working on opposite sides of the table. That is precisely what design-build is all about— collaboration and teamwork that encourages design excellence. In this episode of TheSquare, we sit down with several of Corgan’s aviation experts to discuss how they see design-build shaping the future of project delivery.
Design-build is known as a procurement method that is becoming the delivery method of choice at airports across the country. Used initially to deliver massive scale terminal projects, more and more projects of various size and scale are utilizing a design-build approach to realize the value of the collaboration that comes from a single point of responsibility. Listen in as the panel of aviation experts explores the changing dynamic of project delivery, designing to budget, the benefits of co-location, and innovations that elevate the design and construction of our built environments.

Perspective is all around us. In many ways, it is responsible for some of the greatest leaps in our understanding of the world. It’s the common brainchild of achievements in science, mathematics, and the arts. But, most importantly, a new perspective breeds innovation because it challenges the traditional mindset. On this week’s episode of TheSquare, we sit down with Hugo, Corgan’s research and development arm, to discuss the 2021 Curiosity Report.
On the heels of a year that fundamentally changed us — how we approach each other, the spaces we inhabit, our lifestyles and routines, or how we respond to change — Corgan’s 2021 Curiosity Report aims to stretch our perspective to confront biases and blind spots, poking the proverbial bear. By examining the relationship between emerging technologies and user behaviors, we can embrace changes that sit outside of our comfort zone. We tap into the power of data-driven design to rethink everyday human experiences, promote access to better education, investigate the needs of the modern workforce, and renew our focus on the environment. Listen in as Hugo brings us inside the report to explore molecular, aerial, human perspectives — and everything in between to make room for a world of possibilities!

Over the past decade, evolving teaching methods and innovations have changed the way our students learn, and now the coronavirus pandemic has undoubtedly changed the pedagogical necessity of utilizing technology. However, we’ve realized increased use of technology has not been an ideal substitute for in-person learning. On the contrary, it has exposed a widening technology gap between students and teachers alike, exacerbated a crisis among lower-income families who depend on the school system for everyday necessities and has decreased students’ ability to build the social bonds they so desperately need.
On this week’s episode of TheSquare, we sat down with Dr. Kevin Berkopes, Founder and CEO of Crossroads Education, to discuss the gaps in the education system and the path to a future where students have equitable access to personalized education. Crossroads Education recently partnered with Hugo, Corgan’s research and development arm, to conduct a three-week design sprint to reimagine a new educational system of distributed facilities that augment school districts by providing access and support to a variety of locations.
Tune in to learn more about the design sprint, providing both a digital and personal support system for students, leveraging innovative learning methods that support individual needs.

TheSquare Ep 25 · Women’s History Month Panel Discussion
Tuesday Dec 28, 2021
Tuesday Dec 28, 2021
In honor of Women's History Month, we have a candid conversation with a few of Corgan's women designers, architects, and leaders shaping the architectural industry today. Women's History Month is an annual celebration of the many contributions that women — past and present — have made in our communities around the world. In this episode, the panel celebrates women's accomplishments, reflects on the roadblocks and glass ceilings still present today, discusses how to advocate for yourself, and how we can take part in innovative solutions for getting women back in the workforce.
As we consider what remains and how to move forward from the lasting effects of COVID-19, the conversation offers important insight in addressing the unique and unprecedented impact of the pandemic on women in the workforce. Almost 1 million mothers have left the workforce since the start of the pandemic—with Black, Hispanic, and single mothers among the hardest hit. With the percentage of women in the workforce now back to that of the late 1980s, we hope you'll listen in and join us in the comments as we consider where we've been, where we're going, and what we can learn from the past.
Join us in celebrating the contributions of these women and women around the world for #womenshistorymonth !
